Your Mission Field

When we consider the topic of “Mission and Me” in the context of Jn. 9:4 and 2 Cor. 6:1-2 the first and obvious question that comes to mind is whether God is calling each one of us to go to the mission field – be missionaries? Indeed, in all the 4 Gospels and also the book of Acts, we find Jesus, after His resurrection, commanding His disciples to go into the world to preach the good news to all nations. As believers and followers of Jesus, we ARE His disciples. The Great Commission given by Jesus to His disciples as His parting command is therefore applicable to every believer! There is an underlying tone of great urgency: “Night is coming, when no one can work.” and “NOW is the day of salvation.”

Many Christians do not think (feel) that it is their calling to serve as missionaries overseas (mission field). They have family responsibilities at home to consider: i.e. caring for the family including aged parents, children’s education, job commitments etc. Other Christians struggle with the fact that their loved ones do not yet know Jesus as Saviour and Lord. How then can they reach others for Jesus in overseas mission when they have not even reached their loved ones locally for Jesus? But the “harvest (mission) field” includes everyone and anyone whom we come into contact with in our daily lives, inside and outside of our homes and not just the people overseas. We are reminded that as God’s appointed workers in sharing the Good News we are not to receive His grace in vain. We must be channels of blessings in sharing God’s grace and gift of salvation to others – family, relatives, work colleagues, neighbours, and friends.

Our main purpose in life as Christians is to love God and to worship Him faithfully – we owe our salvation to Him. The priority of our lives must therefore be in line to this main purpose – lives of obedience to His calling to share the Good News about Jesus. Apostle Paul exhorts us to do just this in 2 Cor. 5:15, “And He (Christ) died for all, that those who should live no longer live for themselves but for Him who died for them and was raised again.” The priority of our lives (and the great privilege) must be to share the Good News of Jesus to ALL those who do not yet know Jesus Christ as their Saviour & Lord! That’s Mission and Me!
