The Incarnation

Jesus Christ Himself is the mystery of godliness. The secret once concealed, is now revealed to believers (Col. 1:27). Paul writes to Timothy to teach how people should conduct themselves in the church which is the pillar and ground of truth. This truth that the church is to uphold is the mystery of godliness.

Six things concerning Jesus Christ make up the mystery of godliness:

  1. Jesus was manifested in the flesh;
  2. Jesus was vindicated by the Spirit – God was pleased with the sacrifice of His Son, and justified by the Spirit;
  3. He was seen by angels;
  4. preached among the Gentiles;
  5. believed on in the world and
  6. received up in glory.

These statements are true and vital facts, to be believed and acted on by all believers of Jesus Christ. The life and times of Jesus Christ are summarised in these marvellous and meaningful words.

How was Jesus manifested in the flesh? The proof of Jesus resurrection is showing Himself alive to His many disciples after His resurrection from the dead. On the same day that He arose, He was seen and handled by His closed disciples in a locked room. The disciples were glad when they saw Him. He pronounced peace to them and showed them His hands and side. He again pronounced a blessing of peace to them and commissioned them to go forth out into the world. He breathed on them the breath of the Holy Spirit and gave them the authority to tell others of forgiveness in His Name.

Why did Jesus have to be seen in the flesh? Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus was clothed in human likeness to show the loving and holy character of God the Father. He died on behalf of sinful people of the world to redeem them from the penalty of sin. He was with the Father God on high from all eternity and yet humbled Himself when He manifested Himself in the flesh.

We are to train or exercise ourselves towards godliness which is profitable or having value for all things, both in this life and in the life to come (1 Tim 4:7-8). We must follow our LORD Jesus Christ, the mystery of godliness revealed, and take our lessons in humility from Him.
