Hebrews Chapter 7 starts the section in the book which outlines how Jesus’ Priesthood is superior to that of the Aaronic Priesthood. It begins by looking at the fascinating Old Testament character of Melchizedek and presents four reasons on why the Order of Melchizedek is like that of the Order of Jesus and superior to Order of Aaron.
Melchizedek was both King and Priest. During Old Testament times, the Throne and the Altar were separate institutions. Yet, Melchizedek held these two Offices. Aaron never had that privilege for he was only High Priest. Jesus is both our King of kings and our Great High Priest.
His name is significant. Melchizedek means “King of Righteousness”. Salem means peace (Shalom) and so he was also a “King of Peace”. Righteousness and peace are often found together in the Bible (Isa. 32:17, Ps. 85:10, Jam. 3:17-18). True peace can only be experienced on the basis of righteousness. If we want to enjoy peace with God, we must be “justified (declared righteous) by faith” (Rom. 5:1). Man cannot produce righteousness by keeping the Mosaic Law. It is only through the finished work of Jesus on the cross that righteousness and peace could have “kissed each other”.
Melchizedek had no genealogy. This was atypical of important characters during Old Testament times. The significance of this was that his Priesthood, unlike that of Aaron’s, was based on who he was and not what he inherited. In addition, having no genealogy, this hints that Melchizedek was not born and did not die which implies his Priesthood lasts forever. In this way, he is a picture of Jesus, the eternal Son of God. Since there is no record of his death, it seems that Melchizedek is still serving as a Priest and King. This is another way in which he is like Jesus.
Melchizedek was superior to Abraham. Abraham gave Melchizedek tithes from the plunder and he blessed Abraham. It is always the superior person who blesses the inferior. In giving tithes and receiving his blessing, Abraham affirmed the greatness of this King/Priest. Melchizedek’s Priesthood is superior to Aaron’s because it is Priesthood of righteousness and of peace. It is a Royal Priesthood that is personal, not inherited and eternal. Melchizedek is a King and Priest in the image of our true King and Great High Priest, Jesus.
