The Greatest Commandments

“To love the whole world is no chore; my only problem is the neighbour next door!”  Often used with a tinge of humour, this saying is actually quite profound.  It draws attention to the frivolous use of the word “love” in this context and in our present generation.  It may also be reflective of the condition of man’s heart and conscience to be able to declare without reservation that he/she “loves the whole world”, and yet conclude with all honesty (or naivety) the problem with loving the person living next door.

Jesus responded in Matt. 22:37 to the trick question by the “expert in the law” with a power-packed answer: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”  The Lord is OUR God.  We are COMMANDED to love Him.  And we are to love God with ALL our heart, soul and mind!  (Mk. 12:30 includes strength).  God knows the frailty of man’s heart and therefore demands our total and complete devotion to Him.  From our hearts (passion) – our love for Him must be passionate.  The Chambers Dictionary defines “passion” as “the sufferings and death of Christ”.  Are we passionate for God?  From our souls (spiritual) – our love for God must result in an intentional priority to put God first in our lives (Mt. 6:33).  From our minds (intellect) – our love for Him must be the driving force to diligently seek Him through the study of His Word.  From our strength (energy) – our love for God must result in us utilising all the energy and resources that the Lord has blessed us with as stewards to “do His will” (Mt. 28:18-20; Acts 1:8).

The second greatest commandment “Love your neighbour as yourself” implies a love that is selfless and beyond the understanding of the world!  We areCOMMANDED to show “1 Cor. 13 love” to all around us.  There is to be no distinction between others and self!  Impossible?  HIM-possible! (Phi. 4:13)

When we apply these two greatest commandments to being missional in our service to God, it means total surrender, obedience and commitment to our Lord.  Are we ready?  Are we willing to work towards being ready?  Yes we are – step by step, with the Lord’s enabling and empowerment!  Jesus tells us: “If you love Me, you will obey what I command” (Jn. 14:15)
