Great To Be Young!

Age is but a number.

In 1 Tim. 4:12-16, Paul encourages Timothy, the young Church leader, not to let age be a stumbling block in his ministry. He must be a role model to others through his words, his life, his actions, his beliefs and his being. “Youth” can refer to being young in faith, a new believer. However, do not let “youth” be an excuse to being spiritually immature. It is a gift of God to be used for His glory – “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth” (Eccl. 12:1). Youth can be used mightily for God with the energy He bestows and the fervent enthusiasm He grants. This needs to be coupled with fuel – not only physical fuel in terms of food but also spiritual fuel. Apostle Paul gave Timothy 3 tips: Devotion to the Word, Nurturing his gifts and Diligence in his efforts.

Tip 1 – “devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching.” Timothy had the Scriptures to guide him. We too have the Bible as our guide. We need to read it and live by it. It is essential to study the Bible and practise it through preaching and teaching.

Tip 2 – age does not matter in our walk with God because our faith, our spiritual maturity and our whole being are gifts of God. We use these gifts responsibly for the glorification of His kingdom. So, let us all take stock of our lives and see what God has blessed us with – gifts, personalities and time. We use them for greater joy as we serve our God who will grow His kingdom through us.

Tip 3 – Timothy needs discipline and diligence. He is to live out the Christian life for it produces fruit in spiritual growth. We live God’s way as a testimony to others as they see us grow and progress in our walk with Him. The world is a harsh place but take heart, our God has overcome the world (John 16:33)! What an encouragement for the young and for all others to press on with God as our Source.

Remember: God’s Word will not return to Him void (Isa 55:11). He is the only source of strength, energy, love and wisdom which we need to do His work. Let us be faithful in walking close to Him, sowing seeds for Him and in His perfect time, we will enjoy the beautiful harvest together.
